The Wright Foundation – For Global Genetic Awareness

The Wright Foundation has dedicated themselves to help build awareness and educate the public on a rare genetic mutation that is attributed to causing ovarian cancer as well as breast cancer in both men and women.  This genetic mutation is referred to BRCA1 and BRCA2.  Between 1 in 400 and 1 in 800 people have this mutation but more importantly; 1 in 40 people from Ashkenazi Jewish decent are affected including both men and women.   According to studies,  the BRCA1 mutation is about 8-10% more prevalent in Ashkenazi Jewish descendants.  Another concerning number is that BRCA1 carriers have a 55-65% chance of developing breast cancer by age 70.

Although these facts are certainly alarming, The Wright Foundation wants people at risk to know that education as well as early detection is key.  Founder Ken Schwartz’s sister Susan (who’s memory is what this foundation is built on) passed away after a valiant 7 year battle with ovarian cancer.  Ken made it a mission to help those who are unaware of the risks, as well as help provide resources to research to ultimately find a cure.

Part of their community outreach is an ongoing Yoga event every Sunday between 9-10am @ Ellies’s 50’s Diner.  It’s $10 per class in their Flamingo Banquet Room.  If you would like to participate, feel free to just show up, or you can call/email Ken @ yogawithken@gmail.com, (561)-400-5941.
