INTHEBLACK is a woman’s contemporary line founded by a mother-daughter team. Marilyn, a single mother with a daughter in her 20s, was finding it difficult to find fashion forward, sophisticated, and figure flattering clothes. After a shopping trip, she would immediately bring all of her new purchases to the tailor to alter the fit or change the look of the clothes all together. For years she thought about the kind of line she and her friends were looking for. In 2012, Marilyn’s daughter, Alek, was in the last year of business school and she began to worry. She felt that graduates today did not have the same career opportunities that were once available. Wanting to secure her daughter’s future, Marilyn moved forward with the business. Together, the mother-daughter team blend their aesthetics and creative perspectives to develop easy-to-wear designs that evoke a youthful sophistication – designs that would be appropriate for Alek’s generation, but when styled a different way are also appropriate for Marilyn’s generation. With designs casual enough for the day time but sophisticated enough to take you into the evening, the founders work towards developing a brand that is recognized for its sophistication, edge, and perfect fit. –
